Open reservations for San Simón Fiddle India 2024 (Special Rajhastan) 2024, a magical musical journey to the Asian subcontinent
1st to 7th July, San Simón Island, Bay of Vigo, Pontevedra
San Simón Fiddle is a children’s and youth summer course with a long history, where musical activities are combined with other leisure and free time activities. Organized by the Galicia Fiddle Cultural Association, it is a unique experience built from coexistence and cultural exchange, in which each edition is dedicated to the popular music of a country or region.
A week aimed at promoting the use of string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar) in the field of traditional music and learning by ear, enjoying the incomparable natural setting of the San Simón Island.
In the next edition, which will take place from July 1st to 7th, more than a hundred participants will experience a magical encounter, a unique fusion between two captivating musical traditions: the vibrant heritage of Rajhastan and the rich Galician tradition, having the opportunity to learn from musicians brought directly to spread instruments such as the ravanattha or the sarangui used in Indian music.
Like every year, we will celebrate a concert on the last day where culture and musical diversity unites people from different parts of the world, showing us that music is a beautiful tool to promote values such as interculturality or peace, as well as social and cultural enrichment.
Among the invited teachers and artists, we can already confirm Hari Ram dum Bopá, a ravanatha player who has been making music his way of life for more than 30 years in the area of Jaisalmer, Rajhastan; or Raphäel Maillet, intrepid French violinist and storyteller who will surprise us with his peculiar way of understanding music.
In order to reserve a place in this year’s course, Galicia Fiddle members, in addition to another great series of advantages, will have a first exclusive reservation period until February 15th, the day from which anyone interested can reserve their place through our website.
San Simón Fiddle stands out for using a learning method where music is transmitted orally, dispensing with sheet music, which sharpens the musical retention capacity of listeners and learners, allowing them to discover another way of relating to their instrument, encouraging them to enjoy music independently of the technical level.
Beyond the musical activity, the course is completed with dance workshops, bio-themed workshops, or lutheria samples, and of course, as a hallmark of our activities, efficient waste management thanks to the EcoFiddle manual prepared by SIA Social Education, and the use of Toxic Free products, which allows us to live in a toxic-free space. As a novelty, in this edition dedicated to India, attendees will be able to enjoy a closer look at the representation of authentic Ravanattha musicians with Kathpuli puppets, with an ancient tradition.
The Galicia Fiddle Cultural Association, directed by the violin teacher at the ETRAD of Vigo Alfonso Franco, with the support of the prominent musicians Begoña Riobó or Anxo Pintos among others, has been working for more than a decade to disseminate the violin in popular music Galician, as well as an alternative use of string instruments. Other notable projects of the association are the Encordass Fiddle Fest, the Galicia Fiddle Orchestra or the organization of courses with important international teachers during the year. Likewise, they released the albums “Acorle” (2018) and “Acanteira” (2021), in which they proudly display a good part of the new generation of Galician violinists trained in the association.
